Winter of 2007-2008:
Initial proof-of-concept of Hybrid wind and solar system in Susya

We conducted a needs survey in the community of Susya and decided to concentrate on energy issues. A later survey of wind and solar resources proved the viability of using renewable energy to provide the community with energy services. Initially two systems were built to test the concept.

  1. Basic survey of energy needs was performed in conjunction with the community of Susya.
  2. Basic survey of wind and solar resources in the region was performed using both in-site measurement and secondary resources.
  3. The installation of two solar and wind systems--one that is based on a home-made wind turbine and scraped solar panels and another one that is based on ‘off the shelf’ components. This stage has been completed with the generous help of two organizations (British Shalom Salam trust and The center for emerging futures), and the two systems are now operational with the Nawaje Family where they provide enough power for lightning, cellular phone recharging and a TV set.
  4. Evaluation of the two systems detailed above according to the parameters detailed bellow:
    1. Power production and consumption.
    2. Reliability and maintenance.
    3. Safety.
    4. Local production of components (support, mounting, wiring, etc).
    5. Adaptation of different solar and wind components to match the needs of the rest of the families, by conducting wind speed survey in different locations.
